Tukaram lived in India in the 15th century and is believed to have reached the same level of spiritual understanding as Rumi and St. Francis. He is often compared to St. Francis because of his love for animals and animals’ love for him. It is said that birds often rode on his shoulders as he walked the streets of his village, singing his poems to God.
I hope that you enjoy this poem as much as I do!
“First He Looked Confused”
I could not lie anymore,
So I started to call my dog, “God.”
First he looked confused,
Then he started smiling,
Then he even danced!
I kept at it:
Now he doesn’t even bite.
I am wondering if this might work on people?
I invite you to join me in remembering that as we extend our love to ourselves and to all other life forms the recognition of their Divineness, we ARE the Divine Presence in the world.
